Research Blog: Music Video Conventions


My group is doing a Selena Gomez & The Scene pop song, titled “Who Says.” This type of song usually portrays elated emotions as well as lifting people up throughout music videos. 

 

CLAMPS 

  • People in videos like these usually wear casual clothes, accessories, sunglasses, layering, and shorts. The hairstyle is usually let down. Men usually wear hats.  

  • Their makeup is soft. Including mascara, lip gloss, eyeliner, and neutral eye shadow. 

  • The lighting is usually vibrant or soft. It may look vintage, filtered, grainy, and a yellow tint. 

  • The people in videos usually act happy and let loose. Many people are also dancing. 

  • The props used in alike pop videos are hairbrushes, lipsticks, balloons, microphones, phones, mirrors, shoes/heels being held, and cameras. 

  • The setting is usually outdoors, stores, restaurants, etc. There is a variety of settings in one video. For example, a setting could be a party. 

CAMS 

  • Close up shot 

  • High Angles 

  • Eye level  

  • Low Angle 

  • Tracking shot 

  • Wide shot 

  • Mid shot 

  • POV shot 

Sound 

  • Soundtrack: This is the music sung by the artist. 

  • Ambient sounds: These represent background noises, such as texting, cars, wind, etc. 

  • Dialogue: This is usually at the beginning or end of the music videos. 

 

Editing 

  • Spilt Screen- shows two clips at once 

  • Fade in/out- adds a dramatic effect to the beginning and end of the video 

  • Slow motion- adds a dramatic effect of the action  

  • Shot reverse shot 

  • Cutaway  

  • Jump cut 

  • Tracking shot 

  • Selfie shot- represents the action of taking a selfie 

  • Candid shot

Production Blog - Filming Day One

Yesterday was our first day of filming. When school ended all of my group mates  went into Angie’s car, and started a very interesting mission. I wasn’t able to go with them since I had an interview for volunteering at a hospital. This made me very nervous since I didn’t want to miss out on anything but it ended up being okay. By the time I got back everyone had just started filming since they were getting some props that were needed. Right after, Aleiah was dropped off to my house and brought red yarn. A few minutes after I got there, Hannah and Lili changed outfits to athleisure. Then, everyone went outside in my neighborhood and it was time to start filming. Our first scene was the scene where Chloe and Rachel work out outside and “accidentally” bump into one another. Production Blog: Costumes

The film that my group is doing is a horror film. The interesting part about this is that there isn't necessarily a set costume for horror films. If it was a coming of age movie then there would be a better guideline for what to wear. However, people get killed wearing anything. This poses the question "what to wear during a horror movie?" It should be something easy to move in. The reason for this being because the actors are going to have to run from the killer. The film unfortunately doesn't have stereotyped characters. This means that there's no geek for example who can wear a button up for no reason. Instead everyone in the film is supposed to be a normal girl. So what do normal girls wear? My group came to the conclusion that a t-shirt and pants would be fine. Since the filming is at night, in order for our clothes to be visible everyone would have to wear a lighter color. Planning Blog: Storyboard

  1 st Sheet :   The film starts with a n establishing shot of the house on which the name of the studio, “ Blue Breeze Studios” will appear. That shot t hat shows a creepy girl slowly walking through one of the windows . Soon after appears a four shot of teenage girl s , Angie, Emma, Aleiah and Lili, all hanging out in a bedroom, gossiping, when one of them , Emma, starts to distance herself from her friends and goes to the bathroom. At this moment, the name of the production company , “ A Plume Productions Film” pop s up on the lower left corner . When in the bathroom, an eye -level shot as well as short cuts will show Emma glitching into her alternate self, portrayed as a creepy girl .
